Sustainability, Luxury and Society: HULA
SUSTAINABILITY - if you're mesmerised by this glamorous fashion world, you may be familiar with this word as it has been one of the hottest topics recently. There are quite a few pre-loved designer items within our digital marketplace. HULA catches our eyes with their incredible collections and a high corporate social responsibility awareness (CSR) as well.
In this special edition, we invited Sarah Fung, Founder of HULA to share the insight of the online business as well as the charitable activities hosted by HULA. (Don't miss the promotional code at the button!!!)
What differentiates HULA as compared to other pre-loved designer fashionwear online platforms?
We value our highly curated selection, so when our customers shop they know they won't be shifting through loads of 'unwanted' items but items where you would constantly be saying "they are crazy to sell this!". As we mainly collect from fashion insiders (women who work or are connected to fashion), it means we get the most updated style and it helps puts another layer on combating receiving non-authentic goods.
Any specific garment condition Hula does not accept?
We don't accept; non-authentic brands, fast fashion brands (unless they are a cool collaboration), overworn shoes and worn underwear (apart from if it's a slip or a corset).
Have you ever received any interesting item that you have to reject kindly?
A chess board!
Do you have a valet team for the collection service? How does it work and what’s the schedule?
We have a Butler Service where we do all the work for our sellers from collection, listing, upload, pricing and storage.
Apart from donating 5% of your net profits to partnered charities, any other CSR activities HULA has done since the company establishment?
We regularly participate in talks about sustainability to do our part to help re-educate about the benefits of buying preloved. Last year we hosted a panel discussion on the topic 'Has sustainability become fashionable?" featuring key speakers from Kering Group, Redress and HK Tatler. Fashion sustainability is such an interesting and complex topic that there is always a new discovery learnt from these discussions.
With textiles waste being the second largest pollutant in the world, HULA is doing its part to help re-educate and spread the word about the environmental benefits of buying pre-owned. To put it into perspective: ”If one million women bought their next item of clothing secondhand instead of new, we would save 6 million KG of carbon pollution from entering the atmosphere” — 1 Million Women.
When was the last pop up and what was the theme?
Our last pop up was in May - it was called 'Get Lucky With HULA' in this beautiful space in Wong Chuk Hang where every rail was curated and we had a central installation of specially printed HULA Lai See green envelopes, which were hung on twisted branches and looked amazing.
We called it 'Get Lucky' because at HULA you have the chance to find that unique one-off piece from past season that you missed buying and that fits you perfectly. From the lucky shirt that won you that job, the lucky first date dress, to those lucky heels that have experienced many a good night out with friends.
In Asia, there is also a prevalent idea that when garments are passed on, we might ‘wear the bad luck’ from their previous owners. We wanted to spin this round and ask 'How about good luck?" with a campaign of videos and an exclusive event featuring four lucky influencers who also sold some of their pieces at the event. Why not pass and receive good luck through shopping pre-owned items at HULA!
